Magnolia & Queen AnneTrack and Field

Frequently asked questions

Everything parents typically ask, in one place.

1. What is the difference between Magnolia CC Youth Track & Field and Queen Anne Quicksters?

They are two teams that operate as one program. Athletes from both teams practice together on Mondays and Wednesdays, compete together at meets, and share the same coaching staff. The only difference is the community center each team registers through: Magnolia CC Youth Track & Field registers through Magnolia Community Center, and Queen Anne Quicksters registers through Queen Anne Community Center. Pick whichever community center works better for your family.

2. What ages can participate, and how are age divisions determined?

The program is open to athletes ages 5 through 17. Seattle Parks and Rec assigns athletes to one of seven age divisions based on birth year:

  • Flea: born 2020-2021
  • Mosquito: born 2018-2019
  • Bantam: born 2016-2017
  • Gazelle: born 2014-2015
  • Youth: born 2012-2013
  • Intermediate: born 2010-2011
  • Young Women / Young Men: born 2008-2009

3. Is any experience required? Are there cuts?

No experience required, and there are no cuts. The program welcomes athletes of every skill level, from first-time runners to returning competitors. Coaches meet each athlete where they are and help them improve.

4. When does the season run?

The season runs in the spring, with several weeks of weeknight practices leading into weekend meets.

5. What events will my child compete in?

At each meet, athletes select up to three events: two running plus one field, or two field plus one running. Relays are a separate, additional option. Available events depend on your athlete's age division:

  • Flea: 50m, 100m, Long jump
  • Mosquito: 50m, 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1500m, 4x100m relay, Long jump, Shot put, Turbo javelin
  • Bantam: all Mosquito events plus 3000m
  • Gazelle, Youth, Intermediate, Young Women / Young Men: same as Bantam, minus the 50m

6. Is practice held in the rain?

Yes. Practice runs in nearly any weather. The only reason we cancel is a thunderstorm.

7. Are meets cancelled for rain?

No. Meets run rain or shine. Like practice, the only reason Parks and Rec cancels a meet is a thunderstorm. Dress your athlete in layers.

8. Are cleats or spikes required?

No. Cleats and spikes are entirely optional, and many athletes compete in regular athletic shoes.

9. What should my athlete bring to practices and meets?

A water bottle, athletic shoes, and clothing they can move in. Layering works best for Seattle weather. At meets, bring warm layers for between events. Label everything with your athlete's name.
